1950 World Cup Brazil

June 29 Belo Horizonte, Independencia Stadium
USA 1 England 0

This was perhaps the most spectacular upset in the history of the World Cup and one that will never be forgotten, especially by the Brits. No one could believe it when in the 37th minute Joe Gaetjens scored a diving header for the United States. The 1-0 score-line would stand.
So shocking was this defeat that the English papers assumed the report from Brazil was a type-o and recorded it as a 10-0 win to England. The English wore a blue strip for this match. They would never wear blue again.
Here's hoping England suffer their second greatest World Cup defeat on June 12 in Rustenburg, South Africa.
Come on you Yanks!

  1. The New Yorker just ran a big article in last weeks issue about this and Tim Howard. Brillant!
